Some indelible moments:

  • The first time I saw “the wave” — “The wave” is something that all Subaru WRX owners do when they see each other on the roads.  It is so weird to see.  In addition to the wave they will also flash their lights at each other, or wave, just to show the other person that they saw them and its like they know something that no one else knows.  Honestly, the first time I saw “the wave” I couldn’t believe it happened.  I remember saying to Liam”What was that? like what just happened? Do you know that person?” And he would answer and be like no, its just something we do.  I am talking about all WRX owners when they see each other anywhere, they have this secret wave, as an outsider (in the passenger seat) your right there, and yet you feel as though you are missing something. IT IS SOOOO ODD. But when you think harder about it, its kinda cool in a way because how many people can say they have like this secret wave with other people they don’t even know!

  • The first time I got to drive his car! — Take about a awkward moment.  I would always joke when we would go somewhere and we would take his car.  We would get up to the car and I would be like “I’ll drive”, and he would just like laugh, one of those”yeah right” laughs.  What was so shocking about the first time I drove his car, was that I didn’t know (and still don’t really know) how to drive a standard car.  I would always stall of give the passenger, trying to teach me, whiplash.  Honestly, I was made to drive an automatic car. So anyway, the first tim eI got to drive his car was through our town to the grocery store.  I was so scared I had to stop on a hill, and when I pulled out on to the main road, who was behind me? a trooper.  Of course anxiety stepped in and I completely wanted to freak out.  I was getting so nervous, and the surprising thing was that Liam was so at all scared that I was driving his car.  You would think someone who has such an obsession would never let someone else drive his car, especially someone who doesn’t know how to drive standard. He was more calm than I was in the car.  By the time we got to the store I was so anxious because I never drive standard, in a new car, with a trooper behind me, that I refused to drive the car home because I was scared.  Looking back on it though, I really liked driving that car. It was the easiest standard i’ve ever tried to drive. It picks up so quick that I never had to fuss with the clutch and the gas, it was just nice.  AT that moment I kind of realized why he loves this car so much. It is a really awesome car, and any one can drive it! ;)
  • I think that the second moment would be easier to recreate than “the wave”. I think that I could show the anxiety that I felt when driving, and I could shoot different angles of me and him while both in the car.  I could kind of do like a short confession before showing this scene, where I would say what I think is going to happen “I’m scared to drive this car….” and show how he sees it, “She’ll be fine, she can do it” (showing no sign of anxiety that I am going to drive HIS car) — I could also I could maybe use sound in this scene that would give the intensity that I am feeling during this time of driving HIS car.  The sound could maybe be the song on the radio in the car, just giving the feeling to the viewer that I am feeling myself.

We talked about this a bit yesterday, Michelle, so I’ll be brief here. I like the idea of talking about the wave, because it gets at one of the ways that you have changed your mind about Liam’s investment in this culture. don’t forget that you don’t need to LITERALLY stage and film everything. You can use images that are evocative and metaphoric as well. Initially, you thought this was totally odd, right? So lets think about images that evoke that. What about it is weird? What other kinds of images could we use to explain that? (I keep thinking that it sounds like a cult, or a secret society. So you could use images of famous cults or secret societies—right? Other secret handshakes?)

The wave is great! I know exactly what you are talking about because my father owns a trucking company and anytime I ride with him I was like “oh, you know that trucker?” NO! He didn’t know that trucker, but they all wave when they pass each other on the road. It’s kind of like a respect for the other driver who you share something with- a similar vehicle. Maybe you could even just do something with respect, rather than cults. Or respect within cults.

When I read your comment about the “the wave,” I was dying. My boyfriend owns a jeep wrangler, and I also had the same experience… there was no flashing of lights… but the wave is always there. I didn’t believe him, but it’s true, it happens ALL THE TIME. My boyfriend, however, truly believes that he started the whole jeep “wave” thing… I doubt it. Whenever I drive it, people wave all the time and I forget to…. I feel like I am a disgrace to the Jeep world. I own an old subaru, I never get the subaru wave :( You have to include the wave in your film, it is classic.
