The main emotion I am feeling from this topic is love or passion.  I used to think that the WRX was just another car, but now I think that if you love something so much it becomes a part of you, it helps define you.  I think that because Liam loves his car so much it has truely become a part of who he is.  Because this is such a big part of who he is I think that in a way it has become a small part of me.  When you spend so much time with someone, you start to become more like that person.   I think that there were times that I didn’t think too much about this car, but my first time driving it, and the first time I saw “the wave” or heard about these Subaru meets is when I started to see that this car was really important to so much people, and so I strated listening more to what Liam wanted to tell me or show me about his car, and it became a big part of my world. 

What I know now is that other people and things can help define you.  Liam has been a part of my life for so long, but in a way we became closer because of his car, and my shift in how I felt about his car.  Once I started learning more and wanting to know more about his car it was like he could talk to me about so many more things that he cared about.  Because I took the time to listen to what he was saying it made us closer.

I think I want my audiences to learn about listening in relationships.  How that the more you listen to someone the better your understanding and relationship is with that person.  Also, I want viewers to learn that when you love something so much it becomes a part of you, it helps define you. 

Two Interesting Facts:

Subaru WRX’s are seen as the best rally car ever.  Without the use of these subaru’s rally racing wouldn’t really be what it is today.  Rally racing is staged courses that can be on anything from rocks, grass, dirt, gravel, ice, snow, etc. anything and you wouldn’t normally dirve a car on. 

They have a flat four boxer engine, which means that it is a horizonally opposed engine.  Most engine pistons move vertically, but subarus so horizontally.  This inproves handleing because it give the car a lower center of gravity.   

Ok, so i’m not competely sure that I did this posting correctly.  The information that I used was mainly about the WRX, and wasn’t about my topic specifically.  My topic has to do more with my relationship, and my feelings about this car, so I didnt know how to show interesting facts about my feelings on this car.  So instead I just showed so information that was new to me, and chose a Subaru forum to show and talk about.

What surprised me about this was learning about the type of engine that this car has.  I know I have heard this information before from my boyfriend, but i never really understood it.  It was interesting to me that the formation of the engine would have such an impact on the handling of the car. I guess i don’t know that much about cars, so I could not have figured that out on my own, but with the help of Liam I was able to understand.  A new question that emerged is that I think  I am trying to cover too much of the actual car, instead of my perspective and feelings about this car.  I think that I have to show and use the Nasioc symbol or logo in my film because if I am going to be showing scenes from the gathering of subaru owners that I am going to on Friday, I want to be able to link that gathering to where it all started, on the Nasioc forum. 

• The first time I saw “the wave” — “The wave” is something that all Subaru WRX owners do when they see each other on the roads.  It is so weird to see.  In addition to the wave they will also flash their lights at each other, or wave, just to show the other person that they saw them and its like they know something that no one else knows.  Honestly, the first time I saw “the wave” I couldn’t believe it happened.  I remember saying to Liam”What was that? like what just happened? Do you know that person?” And he would answer and be like no, its just something we do.  I am talking about all WRX owners when they see each other anywhere, they have this secret wave, as an outsider (in the passenger seat) your right there, and yet you feel as though you are missing something. IT IS SOOOO ODD. But when you think harder about it, its kinda cool in a way because how many people can say they have like this secret wave with other people they don’t even know!

• The first time I got to drive his car! — Take about a awkward moment.  I would always joke when we would go somewhere and we would take his car.  We would get up to the car and I would be like “I’ll drive”, and he would just like laugh, one of those”yeah right” laughs.  What was so shocking about the first time I drove his car, was that I didn’t know (and still don’t really know) how to drive a standard car.  I would always stall of give the passenger, trying to teach me, whiplash.  Honestly, I was made to drive an automatic car. So anyway, the first tim eI got to drive his car was through our town to the grocery store.  I was so scared I had to stop on a hill, and when I pulled out on to the main road, who was behind me? a trooper.  Of course anxiety stepped in and I completely wanted to freak out.  I was getting so nervous, and the surprising thing was that Liam was so at all scared that I was driving his car.  You would think someone who has such an obsession would never let someone else drive his car, especially someone who doesn’t know how to drive standard. He was more calm than I was in the car.  By the time we got to the store I was so anxious because I never drive standard, in a new car, with a trooper behind me, that I refused to drive the car home because I was scared.  Looking back on it though, I really liked driving that car. It was the easiest standard i’ve ever tried to drive. It picks up so quick that I never had to fuss with the clutch and the gas, it was just nice.  AT that moment I kind of realized why he loves this car so much. It is a really awesome car, and any one can drive it!
• I think that the second moment would be easier to recreate than “the wave”. I think that I could show the anxiety that I felt when driving, and I could shoot different angles of me and him while both in the car.  I could kind of do like a short confession before showing this scene, where I would say what I think is going to happen “I’m scared to drive this car….” and show how he sees it, “She’ll be fine, she can do it” (showing no sign of anxiety that I am going to drive HIS car) — I could also I could maybe use sound in this scene that would give the intensity that I am feeling during this time of driving HIS car.  The sound could maybe be the song on the radio in the car, just giving the feeling to the viewer that I am feeling myself.

What is my position on the things that Liam(my boyfriend) brings to my attention about these cars.

What is it about boys and cars? I think its just like a power thing, especially with this kind of car, the driver has complete control over this powerful car. I think guys get a big thill out of this.  From my perspective, its like  why do you need to buy all these parts that are going to make your fast car even faster? I dont ever have the urge to buy performance parts for my car.  I also think that guys like to show off, they like to show what they have, and if they are showing off something that they use every day such as a car, they get a lot of remarks by other people about how nice it is or whatever other people want to say about what they’ve got.

Why do i listen to all of this information about Liam’s car? I guess because it is something he is really passionate about, and I like to know what his passions are, and I like to be able to hold  a conversation with him about his obsession.  Unintentionally, he has taught me so much about his car, and now I have the resources to talk to him about it, and connect on a different level with him about something he likes.

Something I thought would be interesting to focus on was an idea that Stacey brought up to me…what is the relationship between me, Liam, and his car?  I think that this could be some good stuff to focus on.

Also, I think that I want to focus on how I was so reluctant to hear about his car when he first bought it.  To me is was just a car, to him it was something so much more.  I knew nothing about it, but now since I know more about the car I feel closer and that I can hold a conversation with someone about this type of car.  I just feel more intelligent when it comes not just to this type of car, but all cars in general.

Questions I will attempt to answer:

Why did I go from not knowing about this car, to knowing specifics about this car?

 What is it about cars that excite so many people, including me now?

How has Liam’s knowledge of subarus affected me?

I guess my topic is important to me because it is so important and is such a big part of my boyfriend’s life and interests. 

The main problem I am having with this topic is that I don’t know how I am going to make this film about me.  It is so much about my boyfriend and his interests that I don’t know how to turn that into a personal film about myself.  I’m worried that my topic is going to be too boring, I want it to be a fun and maybe humorous film, but I dont want to just rattle off things I know about this type of car.  I want to make a statement for other girlfriends out there who could really care less what type of exhaust their boyfriend had on their car, or what kind of hoodscoop their boyfriend has or wants to put on their car, but they put up with hearing about all of these things because it is impartant to their boyfriend. 

One thing I really want to share with viewers of this film is just the immense amount of hype there is in the world over these cars.  You wouldn’t think this but there are forums online, and gatherings/conventions for people who own these cars.  There are just so many people who are interested in these kinds of cars and I still don’t fully understand why, I’m learning though.

This clip tells the story of a young girl struggling in her fight against anorexia.  It’s personal however it tells a much greater story, especially in the end when she starts recognizing others who have died from anorexia.  The language she uses gives the viewer a strong sense of what she has faced during her illness.  This gives the views a good idea of the pain and stuggle that she has dealt with.  There are no spoken words in this clip, however I think that the silence was meaningful in itself.  We were saying in class how the personal essay evokes a world that the viewer does not know a lot about but can connect to and learn from.  This is true for this clip because not everyone knows about anorexa or how serisous this illness is, so by watching a clip like this we can learn from it and know more about it.  The pictures are relavent also because its not like the author made a video of her whole experience, the pictures were enough to tell a strong story. 

This clip is just about a guy telling about himself.  It is not very descriptive or captivating, however, he is telling a personal essay about himself.  He uses some describing words about his interests.  He talks a lot about blogging and youtube, which a lot of people know about, but not everyone.  When he does talk about topics that people might not know too much of he does a good job of elaborating on these topics so people will have an easier time understanding.  This doesn’t seem like a good example of a personal essay because it doesnt really tell any kind of story, he is just talking about himself and what he knows.

I don’t really have too many obsessions.  I love little kids so every chance I get to go home I visit my 5 year old cousin.  I can’t wait to become a teacher and get to work with kids more often.  I like being outside as much as possible, just keeping busy.

Some hobbies I have are watching movies, bike riding, hiking, and cooking.  I never was into cooking until I moved in to my apartment and didn’t have my mom to cook me dinner every night anymore.  I really enjoy cooking now though.  Some things I still enjoy doing that I was very much involved with in high school are sports, mainly volleyball and softball. 

I have two jobs.  First, I work at The Cheesecake Factory.  Second, I work at School’s Out, a before and after school program in Delmar.

One thing that I am very proud to say that I know how to make is quilts.  I made one a couple years ago for my boyfriend’s father who was sick at the time.  I like to make quilts with my mom and like to make them for other people.
